COLOMBO: Saudi Arabia plans to build the first epilepsy treatment facility in Colombo, Project Officer of the Saudi Fund for Development, SFD, Abdullah Al Shedokhi told Daily News. Shedokhi said the copy of the proposal, which bears a Rs. 2,175 billion ($20 million) price tag was handed over recently to President Mahinda Rajapaksa by Saudi Ambassador in Colombo Mohamed Mahmud Al-Ali at a meeting at Temple Trees recently. Deputy Chief of the Mission, Sultan Al-Dakhel, was also present. “This is not the first time that the Kingdom has come forward to assist the island in such projects. We have just completed the Neuro-Trauma Hospital in Colombo and we are building 1,000 housing units for the tsunami victims in the island,” the official said. Ambassador Al-Ali said President Rajapaksa profusely thanked Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah for his generosity in helping people irrespective of their faiths. He said senior officials from the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) would sign the agreement in Colombo for the construction of the Epilepsy Hospital during the next two weeks. SFD is to give an additional Rs. 319 million grant for the development of health facilities at the Rs. 1.12 billion Neuro-Trauma Hospital. Two years ago, the Kingdom gave Rs. 1.12 billion to construct a bridge and a highway widening. The bridge linked Trincomalee with Kinniya. Trincomalee-Batticaloa highway was also widened with the funds allocated under the agreement. The SFD has given more than Rs. 11 billion for various projects, he said. It offered Rs. 2.8 billion for the second stage of the water supply and sewerage project and provided Rs. 48.1 million for the Mahaweli Development Project System B in 1981. Sri Lanka obtained Rs. 2.38 billion for the Mahaweli Development Project System B Left Bank in 1984. The ambassador said since February his mission had started publishing a monthly news bulletin in Sinhalese, Tamil, Arabic and English. “It provides a comprehensive information about the activities of the mission and the contributions made by the Kingdom toward Sri Lanka’s infrastructure developments,” he added.
