An Indian Police Service officer of the 1970 batch, Virk outranks all serving officers in Maharashtra. The current state DGP, PS Pasricha, was appointed to the top job primarily because Virk was on deputation as director-general of police (DGP) in Punjab. With his return to Maharashtra, Virk was tipped to be Pasricha’s successor after the DGP’s planned retirement on November 30. But that is now in doubt as Virk cannot hold any position till he is cleared of all charges. “He has been made a victim of political vendetta and I feel sorry for him. We were looking to him to become DGP of our state. He is one of the finest officers I have come across. He is the only senior officer to receive the highly-coveted gallantry medal for his fight against militants. The state will miss a competent and honest officer,” said MN Singh, former city police commissioner. Virk has served as additional superintendent of police, Amravati, and deputy commissioner of police, Pune, where Singh was his senior. Virk had some administrative differences with Pune police commissioner R Rangaraju in 1979 and sought deputation with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at the height of militancy in Punjab. He earned the reputation of a daredevil cop who escaped three attempts on his life, including one at the Golden Temple premises. He was later retained by the Punjab government and became DGP during the tenure of Congress CM Amarinder Singh. Virk was suspended by the Akali government headed by Prakash Singh Badal immediately after the latter came to power in March, in an alleged land development case.
