April 30 -- A prominent Christian evangelist known around the world for his controversial writings about Islam and the Qur'an is in custody in the Baldwin County Correctional Center. Dr. Anish Shorrosh is charged with trying to burn down a condominium high-rise where he lived in Daphne. He says he is from the hometown of Jesus, and claims to have preached the gospel in 82 different countries. But now, Dr. Anis Shorrosh is accused of putting dozens of his Daphne neighbors in danger. The Christian evangelist has infuriated Muslims by questioning the Qur'an. Shorrosh claims fanatic Muslims tried to kill him on 3 different occasions. Tuesday night at the Loma Alta Condominiums in Daphne, Shorrosh was arrested, and is now facing charges of attempted arson. Lieutenant Judd Beedy with the Daphne Police Department says: "Well, right now we're treating it as his attempt to burn down Loma Alta Towers. He started a fire in the basement of Loma Alta Towers." Another resident of the condo, Mary Inman, found the news of Shorrosh's actions to be very disturbing. "You live in a high-rise and there's always a concern about some sort of disaster happening." Police say Shorrosh was trying to torch the building where he lives. There may be, however, a different target which he had in mind. Police say the evangelist set fire to a trash bin in the garage of the high-rise condo. NBC15 News has learned inside that trash bin, there was a box containing tax records from Shorrosh's Evangelistic Association. Police would not comment on reports the tax records had been found inside the burned trash bin. "Potentially, we could be looking at several death investigations or several murder investigations," Lt. Beedy told NBC15 News. "We could have several people that wouldn't be with us today." Authorities did say Shorrosh is facing another charge of criminal mischief for dismantling a security system at the Loma Alta Condos last week. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24395413/
