“In order to protect the new generation, it is
important to eliminate the means that could lead them astray,” RIYADH, 20 May 2008 — “Dialogue is worship.” This is how Abdulaziz Al-Fouzan describes the art of dialogue. Al-Fouzan, a professor at Imam Saud University, was one of the participants in a dialogue on family matters organized by King Abdul Aziz Center for National Dialogue recently. Sheikh Saleh Al-Hussain, chairman of the National Dialogue Center, opened the meeting emphasizing the importance of the family as the core of every society and the springboard for the next generation. “In order to protect the new generation, it is important to eliminate the means that could lead them astray,” said Al-Hussain. “It is essential to maintain women’s rights in all that could lead to family stability. Women have the right to marriage and society should facilitate it.” The importance of the topic lies beneath the fact that many issues faced by the Saudi family are a result of the lack of communication and dialogue between parents and children. Lack of communication in the family is seen as the main element leading to extremism and other social problems, from which the whole society had suffered. The meeting aimed to shed light on the status of the Saudi family’s dialogue and the importance of this dialogue as a communication channel to link family members, and tackle ideological and behavior issues. A series of interviews were conducted with more than 400 girls and boys of 10 high schools in Riyadh to shed light on major issues affecting them. Participants also suggested using neighborhood mosques, youth camps and consulting centers to spread the dialogue concept among parents and children. The role of academic counselors and social workers at schools was emphasized. They stressed on the need for re-activating dialogue in the family through working with younger children and building their self-esteem. The participants also suggested building specialized centers and establishing a higher council for family affairs. The meeting was concluded with a strong recommendation to set in motion the media and all its channels to build social awareness of the importance of family dialogue in order to help society avoid consequences such as terrorism, domestic violence, the increasing phenomenon of divorce and many other social illnesses.
