Saudi Owner bans Alcohol in Grand Hyatt, Egypt Print E-mail
Wednesday, 18 June 2008
CAIRO — Egyptian authorities are threatening to punish Cairo's luxury Grand Hyatt hotel of its five-star status if its Saudi owner sticks to his refusal to serve alcohol.

"July 2 has been set as the deadline," Fathi Nur, president of the Egyptian Hotel Association, told Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Tuesday, June 17.

"If he keeps it up, the hotel will be dropped down to two stars and its rates will reflect that."

Last month, Abdulaziz al-Brahim, a member of the Saudi royal family and owner of the coveted luxury property that sits on a tongue of land at the edge of the Nile, decided to get rid of all the alcohol in stock.

He ordered the 2,500 bottles of alcoholic beverages at the hotel to be flushed down the toilets.

"300,000 dollars went into the sewers after this decision which totally violates Egypt's hotel rules," said Nur, who met the Saudi sheikh last week.

Islam prohibits any beverage that get people intoxicated, both in small and large quantities, whether it is alcohol, drugs, or something else.

But for authorities in Egypt, where drinking alcohol is not banned by law, religion must stop at the doorstep of touristic establishments.

Hotel rules dictate that any hotel above two stars must serve alcohol.

Egypt's tourism industry, which handled 11.1 million tourists last year, employs 12 percent of the active population and accounts for 11.6 percent of the country's Gross National Product.

The lucrative industry brings in 20 percent of foreign currency receipts.

"If he doesn't want to serve alcohol, it's his choice. If that doesn't comply with our regulations, he has to bear the consequences," said Tourism Minister Zoheir Garranah.

Welcomed

The Saudi owner is currently in talks with American hotel chain managing the property, Hyatt International, whose headquarters are in Chicago.

"We're negotiating now," Grand Hyatt spokeswoman Sally Khattab told AFP.

"Talks will last two or three weeks."

An owner is also not allowed to interfere in the running of affairs when there is a managing company.

"It's like imposing chicken on the menu," said Nur, who owns the prestigious Nile Hilton hotel in central Cairo.

But despite the official opposition, Egyptian scholars have welcomed the ban of alcohol at such a popular destination.

"The decision is very good because at least it allows for the choice of an Islamic hotel," says Sheikh Abdel Baqi of the Islamic Research Academy at Al-Azhar University, the highest seat of religious learning in the Sunni world.

The Grand Hyatt occupies one of the most expensive sites overlooking the River Nile.

It is only minutes from the diplomatic quarter, where the British and American embassies are located.

"It must be encouraged," Sheikh Abdel Baqi told AFP.

"Alcohol lowers man to the level of animal."

Three glasses of alcohol are enough to rob drinkers of their ability to respond to threats, US researchers from the National Institutes on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism concluded in the first study to show how alcohol affects the response of neuronal circuits to threats.

A Welcome Decision
Moderate Opinion (203.101.40.xxx) 2008-06-19 02:48:17

The Prophet SALLALAHUALAYHIWASSALAM referred to alcohol as the mother of sins because after consuming it, man can indulge in other major sins.

Once a pious man met a woman, who invited him towards committing a sin (adultery). The man flatly refused. After her constant insisting, she still failed. Thereafter, she gave him a choice of options, 1. Committing adultery with her or 2. To murder her newly born child, whom had she begot from her previous husband. Or 3. To consume some alcohol which she possessed. If he were not willing to comply then she would scream and falsely inform the inhabitants of that place that he had raped her. The man upon pondering decided to consume the alcohol, taking it to be least harmful of the three sins. Upon the consumption of alcohol, he became intoxicated, and then consequently, he killed the child and also committed adultery with the woman.

So is it NOT an act of terror to prevent someone from taking a measure to establish PEACE in home and society.
well done brother

This is a fantastic step. May Allah help all of us.

Those opposing it are so used to it that they don't see it as a sin. Hope Fathi Nur, president of the Egyptian Hotel Association, is a muslim and understands what it means to be part of a team which is trying to establish something which is islamic. Anyways even if he does not, it should not make a difference to those who look at it as a step forward in Egyptian Tourism industry.
Get rid of this Devilish Thing

The owner of the hotels has every right to ban alcoholic drinks in his property. If Allah and His beloved Prophet forbid intoxicant, or anything else for that matter, who's there afterwards to say it must be legalized.

Didn't the bible in the book of proverbs says that: If a Nation wants to Perish give them strong drink (alcohol or intoxicant)?!!!!

The Divine Law of the Creator or the materialistic law of the modern world, which is better?

May Allah increase his business by having it totally banned.

Peace-

A very good decision which shall have far reaching on the tourism world wide.
tourism should not be linked with alcohal, Mr Nur should think twice before making his decision of down grading the star status of the hotel.he should bear in mind that people come to first hand experience of the area and know about the place and its history and its beauty not the alcohal which if he so desires can have at his native place in his home.in any case the consumption of alcohal is a acurse which Islam has forbidden for the good cause of humanity.
Good Decision

I agree with brother Abdulaziz al-Brahim. Let this 5 star Hotel be without alcohol. Surely it's not the alcohol that makes this Hotel a 5 star?!
Its grandeur, location, scenery, dining, service, and much, much more, should be the deciding factor when choosing a Hotel quality star level.
Furthermore, anyone wanting to consume alcohol, can do so at the nearby restaurants, cafes, hotels, etc, where alcohol is being served. Obviously Hotel rules need to change.
May Allah increase your buisness.
Hypocricy in Laws
faazz (77.31.104.xxx) 2008-06-22 02:15:21

That's what they do.. they want people to succumb to their desires by keeping these laws. So if they want international tourism benefits, they must have alcohol? And they Talk about Tolerating other's cultures and views. Hypocrisy. Look at the airlines, they wouldn't give it except if you had air hostess in them...

discreet poster (76.241.101.xxx) 2008-06-26 06:18:23

I would pay normal fee to stay in this hotel. I only hope that the so called Muslims in America would stop selling alcohol in their stores as well.

It would be nice to see all of their alcohol, intoxicants and other drugs flushed down the toilet.
